, Tell Your Member of Congress to Save Lives by Supporting the Re-Entry Act!
We are currently in the worst overdose crisis in our country's history, with more than 100,000 individuals dying from preventable overdose deaths in 2022 alone. People being released from incarceration are particularly vulnerable to experiencing a deadly overdose, with a 129 times greater chance of overdosing than the general public in just the first two weeks upon release.
The federal Re-Entry Act would significatly reduce this risk by closing a critical health care coverage gap for people in jails and prisons. Currently, federal law bans those who are incarcerated from receiving Medicaid, even if otherwise eligible. The Re-Entry Act would Medicaid benefits to restart 30 days prior to release, making it easier to connect vulnerable individuals to vital health services, including substance use treatment.
The Re-Entry Act is bipartisan and endorsed by a long list of major healthcare providers, law enforcement groups, faith communities, and other organizations across the country. Right now Congress is preparing to renew the SUPPORT Act, a package of several national behavioral health programs. We need your help to urge federal lawmakers to leverage this opportunity to save lives by including the Re-Entry Act within this package.
