Tell Congress to Pass the Equality Act Now!

2021 Equality Act Alert Image

Despite recent wins at the Supreme Court, LGBTQ Americans continue to face widespread discrimination and harassment. More than 2/3rds of LGBTQ people report they've experienced harassment in their personal lives, yet 27 states still lack nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ individuals. The Equality Act would end this unfair treatment by ensuring that all LGBTQ Americans can live, work, and access public services free from discrimination.

The Equality Act would amend existing federal civil rights laws to include nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ individuals in employment, housing, education, access to credit, and jury service. The bill would also:

  • Ban programs that receive federal tax dollars, such as adoption agencies, from discriminating against LGBTQ people
  • Update public accommodation protections to cover sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity
  • Expands the definition of public accommodations to include public transit, stores, and health care providers for ALL categories of protection
  • Clarifies that religious or personal beliefs cannot be used as a license to discriminate against others

This landmark bill has passed the U.S. House of Representatives but must pass the Senate before it can be signed into law by President Biden. LGBTQ Americans have waited long enough to be treated fairly and with dignity. Take action today by contacting your senators and urging them to support the Equality Act!

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to support the Equality Act (H.R.5/S.393). Many LGBTQ individuals continue to experience discrimination and harassment in their personal lives. The Equality Act would update existing federal civil rights laws to ensure that all LGBTQ Americans are treated fairly no matter where they live, work, or use public services.

LGBTQ Americans have waited too long to be treated equally and with dignity. I urge you to vote YES on the Equality Act and to support waiving the filibuster for this critical legislation if required. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
