Support the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act

Dear [Decision Maker],

As a constituent of yours, I am writing to urge you to support the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act (HR 1280). The past year since the murder of George Floyd by officer Derek Chauvin has seen a long overdue conversation happen nationally around the legacy of systemic racism that continues to impact the lives of Black Americans. These disparities are especially stark when it comes to policing. Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and other people of color are more likely than their white peers to experience violence and discrimination at the hands of police. Communities of color are also often surveilled by police at higher rates and are arrested more often than white Americans for similar crimes.

The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act will begin addressing these disparities by enacting several important reforms to improve transparency and accountability within policing. Some of key measures in the bill include:

- Limiting the use of potentially deadly force by banning chokeholds, carotid holds, and "no knock warrants."
- Making it easier to hold officers accountable for misconduct by ending "qualified immunity" and lowering the standard for prosecution to include reckless behavior.
- Prohibiting racial profiling by law enforcement officials and mandating training on biases.
- Requiring local and state police departments to ensure use of body cameras and dash cams.
- Addressing police militarization by limiting the amount of military-grade equipment awarded to law enforcement divisions.

The bill would also establish a national police misconduct registry to prevent officers who are fired for bad performance from being hired at other law enforcement agencies, and it would provide federal funding for community commissions to study additional reforms. These provisions would represent a significant first step toward addressing discriminatory policing and protecting constitutional rights.

Addressing systemic racism within policing is critical to building a more just nation for Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and other communities of color. I urge you to help our country move closer to achieving that goal by voting YES on the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. Thank you for your time.
